The Tailies:
The others who captured Jin, Michael and Sawyer are survivors from the tail section of Flight 815. There were twenty-three survivors from the tail section after the crash, although there are far fewer survivors now. The tailies are staying in what appears to be another Dharma bunker, although theirs is much more primitive than the hatch. Rose's husband, Bernard, is indeed alive with the other tailies.
The Hatch:
According to Sayid, the concrete that blocks the side passage is several feet thick. He and Jack discover that every approach toward the magnet is blocked by several feet of concrete, which reminds Sayid of Chernobyl.
