Lord of the Rings Rings & Things: Mithril Coat

Mithril Coat

Mithril Coat:
- Appears in The Fellowship of the Ring and The Return of the King

In The Fellowship of the Ring:
At Rivendell, Frodo recovered from the wound that he was given by the Witchking at Weathertop. At the Council of Elrond, he volunteered to carry the One Ring to Mount Doom, Bilbo then gave Frodo his Elven dagger Sting and his mithril mail coat, but asked him not to tell anyone that he had it. The mithril coat protected Frodo from a fatal spearing by the Cave Troll at Balin's Tomb in Moria. After the Fellowship escaped Moria and stopped to gather themselves at Dimrill Dale, Aragorn checked Frodo's wound and discovered the coat.

In The Return of the King:
When Frodo was pricked by Shelob, he was found by several Orcs and brought back to the Tower of Cirith Ungol. Once there, the Orcs discovered the mithril coat and started a fight, which resulted in almost the entire garrison being killed off. However, one Orc was able to escape with his coat. Later, at the Black Gate of Mordor, the Mouth of Sauron presented the coat and other personal effects as "proof" of Frodo's fate. This succeeded in drawing some dismay from some of the Fellowship, but Aragorn saw through the ruse.
