The Lord of the Rings Middle Earth Places: Mount Doom

Mt Doom

Mount Doom:
Mt. Doom is located in Mordor. It is where Sauron forged the One Ring. At the end of the Second Age, an Alliance of Elves and Men besieged Mordor on the Gorgoroth Plains. Sauron was defeated when Isildur cut the Ring from his hand. Isildur was then led to the Cracks of Doom in Mt. Doom by Elrond, but Isildur refused to cast the Ring into the fire and instead kept it as a family heirloom.

The only place that the One Ring can be destroyed is in fires of Mount Doom. At the Council of Elrond in Rivendell, it is decided that the Ring can no longer just be hidden, but must be destroyed because Sauron's power is growing. Frodo volunteers to take it. The Fellowship is formed to help Frodo with his task.

Frodo and Sam manage to reach Mount Doom only to have Gollum attack them. This turns out to be a blessing because Frodo finally is overwhelmed by the Ring and takes it as his own. Gollum fights him and bites the Ring (and his finger) off, saving Frodo and all of Middle Earth from Sauron.
