The Lord of the Rings Middle Earth Places: Black Gate of Mordor

Black Gate of Mordor


Black Gate of Mordor:
- Appears in The Two Towers and The Return of the King
- Located on the northwest side of Mordor
- Opens out onto the plain of Dagorlad


In The Two Towers:
After Frodo and Sam capture Gollum, Frodo makes Gollum promise to lead them to Mordor. He leads them to the Black Gate. They happen to arrive when a force of Haradrim is arriving and the Black Gate has been opened. Frodo attempts to go down toward the gate, but Gollum stops him. He tells Frodo that he can get them into Mordor by a secret way near Minas Morgul.


In The Return of the King:
After defeating Sauron's forces on the Pelennor Fields, Aragorn leads the alliance to the Black Gate of Mordor in an effort to distract Sauron from seeking out Frodo and the Ring. They are surrounded by Sauron's forces, but fight on. The Ring is destroyed and Sauron's power fails. The Black Gate of Mordor falls and Sauron's forces flee.
