  • The Rohirrim are a rugged people who are less refined than the Gondorians who live to their south. However, the Rohirrim are well-known as Horse-Lords and breeders of a fine stock of horses. They have often come to the aid of the Gondorians. However, in recent years, their kingdom has gone into decline and has come under new threat from Saruman who lives to the west in Isengard.

Near the end of the third age, the kingdom became downtrodden because King Théoden fell under the influence of his advisor Gríma Wormtongue, who was secretly working for Saruman. This led to the death of Théoden's son Théodred and the banishment of Théoden's nephew Éomer. When Gandalf arrived, he broke Saruman's spell and King Théoden banished Gríma Wormtongue from the kingdom. He then decided to evacuate the city of Edoras to the mountain keep of Helm's Deep where only the arrival of Éomer, Gandalf and a force of Rohirrim saved the keep from falling to Saruman's army of Uruk-hai.

Later, the Rohirrim gathered at Dunharrow and then rode to Minas Tirith in response to the lighting of the Beacons of Gondor where they participated in the Battle of Pelennor Fields where King Théoden was mortally wounded by the Witchking. Éomer then led the remaining Rohirrim with Aragorn to the Black Gate of Mordor.
