Gandalf In The Return of the King:

Gandalf leads several others from Helm's Deep to Isengard, where they find Merry and Pippin serving as Treebeard's Doorwardens. Near the base of Orthanc, Pippin finds a small globe which Gandalf recognizes and takes from Pippin. However, Pippin steals it from Gandalf after they return to Edoras. He looks into the Palantir and Sauron takes hold of him. However, Pippin also learns of Sauron's plans to move against Gondor.

After Pippin's experience, Gandalf takes him to Gondor. They ride up to The Citadel in Minas Tirith to warn Denethor, Steward of Gondor, of an eminent attack from Mordor. The Steward brushes Gandalf off, saying he knows what is coming and also that Gandalf is bringing Aragorn to take leadership away from him. Over Gandalf's advice, Pippin speaks to Denethor. He tells Denethor of Boromir's fate and pledges his service.

That night, they see the signal from Minas Morgul. Denethor refuses to light the beacons, so Gandalf gets Pippin to light the Beacon as a call to Rohan for aid. Gandalf rides out to drive off the Nazgúl as they attack the retreating Gondorians from Osgiliath. When they all return safely to the city, Faramir sees Pippin and recognizes him. He reports to Gandalf about Frodo, Sam and Gollum. After his father convinces him to counterattack Osgiliath, Gandalf tries to stop him.

When Denethor is brought a severely wounded Faramir, he despairs and orders that the city's defense be abandoned. Gandalf countermands his order and takes over command of the defenses as the Orc army besieges the city. He takes time out to rescue Faramir from a burning funeral pyre with his father in the Tombs of the Stewards.

Gandalf joins Aragorn at the Black Gate of Mordor before going with the Eagles to retrieve Frodo and Sam at Mt. Doom. He attends Aragorn's coronation as King of Gondor. Several years later, he returns to The Shire with Bilbo. They pick up Frodo, Sam, Merry and Pippin and journey to the Grey Havens where he sails into the West with the other Ringbearers.
