Gandalf In The Fellowship of the Ring:
Gandalf arrives in Hobbiton bringing fireworks to help celebrate Bilbo and Frodo Baggins' birthdays. He knows of Bilbo's plan to quietly leave The Shire. He insists that Bilbo leave his ring behind, which Bilbo reluctantly does so before departing. When Frodo arrives, Gandalf tells him that Bilbo has left, leaving him Bag End and the Ring. He also tells Frodo not to use the Ring and to keep it secret. Gandalf then also leaves abruptly, telling Frodo that he will return soon.

Gandalf journeys to Minas Tirith in Gondor where he researches the old texts to find that Bilbo's ring might well be the One Ring of Power forged by Sauron in the fires of Mt. Doom in Mordor. Gandalf returns to The Shire and has Frodo test the ring to find that it is indeed the One Ring. He then tells Frodo to leave for Bree where he will meet him. He catches Frodo's gardener, Sam, eavesdropping and orders him to go with Frodo.

Gandalf himself hurries to Isengard to consult with the head of his order, Saruman. Once there, he discovers that Saruman has allied himself with Sauron. After Gandalf turns down his offer to join him, they fight and then Saruman locks him in the tower. He finally able to escape with the help of Gwaihir, Lord of the Eagles, after observing the beginnings of Saruman's transformation of Isengard.

Gandalf is at Rivendell when Frodo awakens. He apologizes for not meeting him in Bree. At the Council of Elrond, Gandalf offers his guidance to Frodo after Frodo volunteers to take the Ring to its destruction at Mt. Doom in Mordor. It is decided that they cannot pass too close to Saruman's stronghold at Isengard. Though Gimli suggests passing under the mountains through Moria, Gandalf chooses to take the Pass of Caradhras.

When Saruman uses the weather to drive the Fellowship back from the Pass of Caradhras, Gandalf lets Frodo choose their route and Frodo selects the way through Moria over heading south closer to Gondor as Boromir suggests. Frodo helps Gandalf figure out the password to enter Moria. They find that the dwarven colony has been wiped out. By Balin's Tomb, Frodo is nearly killed by a Cave Troll. They have almost made it through the mines when they encounter Durin's Bane, a Balrog. Gandalf faces off with the Balrog at the Bridge of Khazad-dûm. Gandalf succeeds in defeating the Balrog, but falls into the abyss with the Balrog.
