Gollum In The Two Towers:
As Frodo and Sam are making their way through Emyn Muil toward Mordor, they realize that they are being followed. One night they pretend to sleep and Gollum attempts to sneak up on them so he can take the Ring back. Instead, they capture him and tie him up, but he is miserable because of the elven rope that they use. Frodo makes him swear on the Ring to not run away, but to help them, and then orders Sam to release Gollum.

Gollum leads them through the Dead Marshes. When Frodo is drawn by the lights and falls into the water, Gollum saves him by dragging him out. Later, Frodo calls him Sméagol, which was Gollum's given name. A Nazgûl rides overhead on a Winged Beast as Gollum explains that the Nazgûl cannot be killed as Sam thought they had drown at the Ford of Bruinen. As Frodo continues to call him Sméagol, Gollum softens and becomes friendlier and shows some trust in Frodo. Sam does not trust him and thinks that Gollum is corrupt beyond redemption, but Frodo has to believe that there is still some good in Gollum because they are both Ringbearers and if there is no hope for Gollum, then there is no hope for him.

Gollum leads Frodo and Sam to the Black Gate of Mordor, which has been opened to admit a force of Easterlings. Frodo releases him from his pledge, but Gollum won't let Frodo go in through the gate. He tells the Hobbits that he knows a secret way into Mordor. Sam does not want Frodo to follow Gollum, but Frodo decides to again trust Gollum. As they move south, Frodo is nearly overcome by the Ring as the Witchking, Lord of the Nazgûl rides nearby.

They make camp and Gollum and Sam argue about two rabbits that Gollum has caught. Sam wants to cook them, but Gollum wants to eat them raw. Later that same day, they watch a raid by Men of Gondor on a force of Haradrim, which includes Oliphaunts, marching to Mordor. Frodo and Sam are caught, but Gollum slips away. He manages to follow them to the Gondorian stronghold of Henneth Annûn. Faramir forces Frodo to lure Gollum out of the Forbidden Pool that he is fishing in and Gollum is captured.

Gollum is dragged back to Osgiliath with Frodo and Sam. Frodo nearly turns the Ring over to the Nazgûl before Sam stops him. Faramir is finally moved to set them free, forfitting his own life by the laws of the land. However, because of Frodo's involvement in his capture, Gollum is angry and has lost his trust in Frodo. He has sworn on the Precious (the Ring) not to harm Frodo, so he decides to lead the Hobbits to "her." Shelob will take care of Frodo and he can take care of Sam, who Gollum does not like at all.
