Chuck


Premise:
When Chuck Bartowski opens an e-mail subliminally encoded with government secrets, he unwittingly downloads an entire server of sensitive data into his brain. Now, the fate of the world lies in the unlikely hands of a guy who works at a Buy More Electronics store. Instead of fighting computer viruses, he must now confront assassins and international terrorists.

With the government's most precious secrets in Chuck's head, Major John Casey (Adam Baldwin, "My Bodyguard") of the National Security Agency resumes his responsibility of protecting Chuck. Casey's partner is the CIA's top agent (and Chuck's dream girl), Sarah Walker (Yvonne Strahovski, "Gone"). They try to keep him safe by trading in his pocket protector for a bulletproof vest.

Also starring are Joshua Gomez ("Without a Trace") as Morgan Grimes -- Chuck's best buddy since childhood, Sarah Lancaster ("What About Brian?") as Chuck's ever-supportive older sister Ellie, and Ryan McPartlin ("Living With Fran") as "Captain Awesome," Ellie's fiancé/husband. Chuck's Buy More team consists of store management in the person of Big Mike (Mark Christopher Lawrence, "The Pursuit of Happyness") and fellow Nerd Herders, Lester (Vik Sahay, "Time Bomb"), Jeff (Scott Krinsky, "The O.C.") and Anna (Julia Ling, NBC's "ER").

Like most broadcast network series these days, we don't immediately watch the first season, but rather wait to see if a show survives into a second season. Once we started in on the first season DVD set of Chuck, we were hooked. The premise of the show has Chuck becoming an unlikely spy, but turned out to be more about the relationships that Chuck has to his co-workers at the Buy More, his sister and her fiance and the two spies. The show started out seeming to focus on Chuck and his desire to make his "pretend" relationship with the gorgeous spy Sarah a real relationship. However, instead of trying to constantly milk that storyline, dynamics with supporting characters were developed and explored. Though his secret spy life is fodder for some comedy, the humor is more often derived from Chuck "everyday life." As the show has progressed, the storyline has evolved as Chuck as matured. The original awkward comedy has remained although the dynamics have changed. One constant has been the hilarious hijinks of the Buy More, which we frankly can never get enough of.
