Gollum follows Frodo and Sam into Emyn Muil where they manage to capture him and tame him. He then leads them out and through the Dead Marshes where he saves Frodo from drowning. He leads the Hobbits to the Black Gate of Mordor , but stops them when they attempt to go in. He tells him that he knows another way. He leads them south into Northern Ithilien where the two Hobbits are caught by Faramir and his Gondorian Rangers. He feels betrayed by Frodo when he is caught down by the Forbidden Pool in Henneth Annûn. He is taken along with the Hobbits to Osgiliath before being freed by Faramir. He leads Frodo and Sam back into Ithilien and to the Ephel Duath Hills where he decides to betray them to Her.
