Sauron In The Return of the King:
Sauron sends the Witchking, Lord of the Nazgûl, out in command of a huge Orc army against Osgiliath, which is quickly overrun. The army then besieges Minas Tirith. When the Rohirrim arrive to aid Gondor, a second wave made up of Haradrim with Oliphaunts is sent against the Men. Sauron expects a third wave made up of Corsairs to arrive, but instead it is Aragorn, Gimli, Legolas and the King of the Dead and so his assault on Gondor is rebuffed.

Meanwhile, Frodo and Sam have entered Mordor and Sauron can sense that the Ring is close. Aragorn proposes that they attack Mordor to distract Sauron and keep him from concentrating his full efforts on finding Frodo and the Ring. They march to the Black Gate of Mordor and Aragorn calls out Sauron. Instead a huge army empties out of Mordor and surrounds Aragorn and his forces. During this time, Frodo and Sam reach the Cracks of Mt. Doom where Frodo finally succumbs to the Ring and claims it as his own. Sauron recognizes this immediately and his Eye turns to Mount Doom. However, Gollum attacks Frodo and bites off his finger and reclaims the Ring as he falls into the fires of Mount Doom, which destroy the Ring. Sauron's power is unbound, his eye fades and the Tower of Barad-dûr falls.
