In The Return of the King:
Aragorn, Gimli and Legolas travel the Paths of the Dead. Aragorn confronts the King of the Dead. He reveals himself to be the heir of Isildur and calls on the King of the Dead to fulfill the oath that he had long ago made to Elendil. Aragorn leads the army of the dead onto Pelennor Fields. After the battle is over, the King of the Dead asks that Aragorn proclaim the oath fulfilled and thus be released from Isildur's curse. Aragorn does so, and the King of the Dead and his men all are released from the curse and are finally able to rest.
