Merry and Pippin welcome Gandalf, Aragorn, Gimli and Legolas to Isengard. He and Pippin then go with them to Edoras and the Golden Hall. Merry bids farewell to Pippin in the Edoras Stables when he is about to leave with Gandalf. Merry then goes to Dunharrow where the Rohirrim are gathering. King Théoden wants Merry to remain behind, but Eowyn carries him to Pelennor Fields where he helps her defeat the Witchking. He and Pippin go to the Black Gate of Mordor with Aragorn. They return to Minas Tirith for Aragorn's coronation in the courtyard by the White Tree. He and the other Hobbits return to The Shire and share a drink at the Green Dragon. A few years later, he goes with the other Hobbits to the Grey Havens to see Frodo and the other Ringbearers sail into the West.
