Check out the The Patriot Resource - Film: Gladiator to further explore the facts, fictions and history behind Gladiator.

This film harkens back to the sword and sandals epics of the '50s and '60s such as Ben-Hur, Cleopatra and Spartacus. The way the Coliseum is reborn is an awesome sight. The film really only has three action setpieces, so it does rely on having some plot. Even so, some of the character development had to remain on the cutting room floor, but thanks to the DVD, those scenes can be viewed. The film has several great acting performances, including Oliver Reed's final role.
