The Patriot makes the list because it is set during the American Revolution, which has long been overlooked by Hollywood probably for reasons of political correctness. Ironically, this movie is from the same producers as Independence Day, the science fiction alien flick which 'gave July 4th new meaning'. Instead of fading away, the movie will long be a rental staple because of Mel Gibson.

Although the film takes some liberties with history, it has given educators a new tool to help interest students in the American Revolution. The film is also unique in that it centers on the fighting in the Southern colonies, which is a part of the American Revolution that is rarely discussed in history books.
