Juba is best described as Maximus' sidekick. He looks after Maximus' wounds after he is picked up by the slave trader at his destroyed home in Spain. When they are bought by Proximo, Juba keeps Maximus from getting himself killed. Unlike Maximus, Juba has something to live for. The son of an African chieftain, he longs to return to his family. His positive outlook helps keep Maximus alive as they fight in North Africa. When they learn of going to Rome, Juba encourages Maximus that there is a way of at least gaining revenge upon now Emperor Commodus or perhaps a fresh start with someone like Lucilla.
