The Lord of the Rings Middle Earth Places: Dagorlad

Dagorlad

Dagorlad:
- Appears in The Fellowship of the Ring and The Return of the King
- Plain outside the Black Gate of Mordor

In The Fellowship of the Ring:
Dagorlad was a great plain located outside of the Black Gate of Mordor. It was where a great battle was fought during the War of the Last Alliance of Men and Elves. Forces led by High Elven-King Gil-galad and Elendil, King of Gondor defeated Sauron's forces. Following the battle, the siege of Mordor began. In the time of Frodo, the end of the Third Age, little of the plain of Dagorlad remains. It is being swallowed up by the Dead Marshes, a miserable place haunted by the spirits of those who fell in battle there.

In The Return of the King:

Aragorn leads the remnants of the Men of Gondor and Rohan to Dagorlad outside the Black Gate of Mordor. He calls out Sauron and they are surrounded by his forces who march out from the Black Gate. They are being overwhelmed when the One Ring is destroyed. Sauron's power fails and his forces flee the Plain of Dagorlad.
