Gimli In The Fellowship of the Ring:
Gimli arrives at Rivendell for the Council of Elrond. At the council, he tries to destroy the One Ring with his axe to no avail. He shows a strong distrust of Elves, but when Frodo volunteers to take the Ring to Mt. Doom in Mordor, he offers his services. As the Fellowship makes its way south, Gimli lobbies for the Fellowship to go through the Dwarven Mines of Moria, but Gandalf wants to attempt the Pass of Caradhras first. When they are driven back by severe weather called up by Saruman, Gandalf allows Frodo to choose the next route. Frodo chooses Moria, to Gimli's delight.

Once they reach Moria, Gimli is dismayed to find that the Dwarven colony has been wiped out by Orcs. They discover this at Balin's Tomb where they are attacked by a Cave Troll and some Orcs. They stave off that attack, but Gandalf falls with a Balrog at the Bridge of Khazad-dum. Aragorn chooses Lothlórien as their next destination. Gimli does not trust that elven stronghold, but is won over by Galadriel. After Frodo and Sam leave the Fellowship behind at Amon Hen, Gimli joins Aragorn and Legolas in their effort to rescue Merry and Pippin from the Uruk-hai.
