John Williams has been the most prominant composer of original music for movies for over thirty years. He's been nominated for an Oscar for his work on thirty-nine films--he was nominated for all the films listed above except Jurassic Park, The Phantom Menace and Harry Potter--and won five times (The Fiddler on the Roof, Jaws, Star Wars, E.T. and Schindler's List). He's also composed music for many of the biggest movie blockbusters of the last twenty-five years. He's scored many of Steven Speilberg and George Lucas' films. He also served as the conductor of the Boston Pops Orchestra from 1980 to 1993.

I wasn't overwhelmed by his scoring for The Patriot. Unlike many of his other scores, I'm unable to listen to it away from the movie, but it serves the film well. Unlike some of his other scores which drive the movie more than the actors themselves (Jurassic Park, for example), his score for The Patriot is subdued and never overwhelms the acting. The score serves as a quiet backdrop for the silent emotional moments of the film, while hinting at the patriotic theme by using woodwinds.
