Elrond In The Fellowship of the Ring:
Elrond served as Gil-galad's herald during the War of the Last Alliance of Men and Elves at the end of the Second Age. During the Siege of Mordor, he was nearby on the Gorgoroth Plains when Sauron struck down Elendil and then was defeated when Isildur cut the One Ring from his hand. Elrond then led Isildur to the Cracks of Mt. Doom and advised him to throw the Ring in, but at the last moment Isildur refused and left Elrond standing there alone.

In Frodo's time, Elrond is the Lord of Rivendell. He heals the wound that Frodo received from the Witchking at Weathertop. As he speaks to Gandalf about Frodo and the Hobbits, he reveals that he lost faith in the race of Men following Isildur's weakness at Mt. Doom. In spite of this, his daughter Arwen loves Aragorn, who Elrond looked after when he was brought to Rivendell as a child by his mother, Gilraen.

Elrond calls a Council of the peoples of Middle-Earth to decide what to do with the One Ring. During the Council, he declares that it can not remain in Rivendell. It is decided that Frodo will take the Ring to the Cracks of Mt. Doom to be destroyed. He then selects eight companions as the Fellowship to help Frodo on his task.
