Charlton Heston:
Bio
Charlton Heston was born on October 4, 1924 in Evanston, Illinois as John Charles
Carter. His first cut his teeth acting in classical productions in the 1940's.
On March 17, 1944, he married Lydia Clarke. He made his Hollywood film debut
in 1950's Dark City. His career began to take off with his lead role
in The
Greatest Show on Earth in 1952, which was soon followed by his turn
as Moses in Cecil B. DeMille's The
Ten Commandments in 1956. He also had a role in Orson Welles' Touch
of Evil in 1958.
Heston now became associated with historical epics. With Ben-Hur
in 1959, he earned an Academy Award and now was a proven box office star. His
next film was El
Cid. He returned to the Biblical epic with 1965's The
Greatest Story Ever Told, followed by Sam Peckipah's Major
Dundee and The
Agony and the Ecstasy as Michelangelo. He also lent his public support
to the civil rights movement during this time.
Heston next conquered science fiction with the cult classics, Planet
of the Apes (1968), Beneath
the Planet of the Apes (1970), The
Omega Man (1971) and Soylent
Green (1973). He also returned to his acting roots with Julius
Caesar in 1970 and Antony and Cleopatra in 1972. He stayed
busy througout the '70's with varied films such as The
Three Musketeers (1973) and follow-up The
Four Musketeers (1974) as Cardinal Richelieu, disaster films Airport
'75 (1974), Earthquake
(1974) and Two-Minute
Warning (1976), as well as historical epic Midway
(1976).
In the 1980's Heston took on fewer film roles although he spent a couple of
years starring in the TV series Dynasty and its spinoff The Colbys.
In the early 1990's he returned to film in Solar
Crisis (1990) and in high profile cameos in Tombstone
(1993), Wayne's
World 2 (1993), Arnold Schwartzenegger's True
Lies (1994), John Carpenter's In
the Mouth of Madness (1995) and Kenneth Brannagh's Hamlet
(1996).
In the latter half of the decade, his roles now were mostly as narrator as in
Disney's Hercules
(1997) and Armageddon
(1998). He also did an uncreditied cameo in Tim Burton's remake of Planet
of the Apes in 2001. Most of his time is now devoted to promoting
causes such as gun rights as President of the NRA since 1998 and supporting
the Republican party. He and his wife have also had successful battles with
cancer in recent years.
