Viggo Mortensen

Character Portrayed in The Lord of the Rings: Aragorn

Born: October 20, 1958; Manhattan, New York

In The Lord of the Rings
Viggo Mortensen easily brings the brooding intellectual traits to Aragorn, as well as the sensitivity for his romance with Arwen, but he surprisingly handles the action as well. Perhaps because he doesn't not seem like the action hero-type, he makes a good Aragorn. In fact, the 'slow' scenes which usually are the weaknesses of an action film, are enjoyable and add to the depth of the film.

Aragorn's moments with Arwen in The Fellowship of the Ring are not awkward and stilted, but instead sensitive and touching. Viggo Mortensen believeably portrays Aragorn's vulnerability with Arwen in a trusting way. The moments with Eowyn in The Two Towers subtly show that he is surprised to find a kindred soul and leads him into a further internal debate over his complex relationship with the immortal Arwen.

The Return of the King does falter a bit when Aragorn finally comes to embrace his noble heritage and take a leadership role. Mortensen doesn't quite pull the transition off. It is the one weakness to his performance throughout the three films.
