Bio
Viggo Mortensen was born on October 20, 1958 in New York City, New York. After a couple of years, he spent the rest of his early childhood living in South America. He also lived in Denmark. As a result, he is fluent in Danish and Spanish and even speaks several other European languages. He graduated from St. Lawrence University in Canton, New York in 1980 with a degree in Government and Spanish.

Viggo Mortensen began acting in plays in New York. He eventually moved to Los Angeles where he continued acting on the stage. In 1985, he made his film debut as a young Amish in Peter Weir's Witness. He married Exene Cervenka in 1987, with whom he had one son, Henry. They divorced in 1997. After spending a decade appearing either in small supporting roles or in independent films, he had substantial parts in Demi Moore's G. I. Jane and A Perfect Murder with Michael Douglas and Gwyneth Paltrow.

Viggo Mortensen landed the role of Aragorn after Peter Jackson fired Stuart Townsend over creative differences. He had only a few days to decide to take the role. When talked to his son about it, his son encouraged him to take the part so he did.

Viggo also is an accomplished photographer and poet, having had several books of poetry and his photographs published.
