August 14 - General George Washington learns that the French fleet is on its way to the Chesapeake area off Virginia.

August 20 - General George Washington begins to cross the Hudson River at Stony Point.

August 22 - Lt. General Cornwallis completes his fortifications at Yorktown and Gloucester.

August 25 - British Admiral Samuel Hood arrives at Chesapeake Bay to find the waters empty.

August 26:
- French Admiral de Grasse arrived off the Virginia Capes.
- French Admiral de Barras leaves Newport, Rhode Island.

September 1 - General George Washington reaches Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.

September 5:
- General George Washington reaches Chester, Pennsylvania.
- British Admiral Samuel Graves arrives at Chesapeake Bay and engages the French fleet.

September 6:
- General George Washington reaches Head of Elk, Maryland.
- The two fleets maintain contact off the Virginia coast, but do not engage.

September 7 - The two fleets maintain contact off the Virginia coast, but do not engage.

September 8 - The French fleet breaks off and returns to the Chesapeake.

September 9 - General George Washington reaches Mount Vernon, Virginia.

September 10 - Admiral de Barras arrives with his fleet from Newport, Rhode Island.

September 12:
- General George Washington leaves Mount Vernon, Virginia.
- General George Washington learns that Admiral de Grasse has gone to confront a British fleet.

September 15 - General George Washington learns that Admiral de Grasse has returned and Admiral de Barras has arrived from Newport, Rhode Island.

September 28:
- General George Washington arrives at Yorktown, Virginia.
- General George Weedon is reinforced by Lauzen's Legion in allied operations at Gloucester.

September 29 - General George Washington inspects the British positions.

September 30 - The British abandon three outposts to the southwest of Yorktown.
