Although The Last of the Mohicans bears little resemblance to James Fenimore Cooper's book, it has a charm about it. There is no profanity or gratuitous sex. There are jokes about all the running in the movie, but the running hammers home the time period. The movie just has a sparce and authetic feel to it. It captures the awkwardness of romance and courting in the 18th century.

Recently, Director Michael Mann issued a Director's Cut, which cut out some material (such as the Clannad song) and extended other scenes. The movie is aided by a good soundtrack, which has recently been re-released in chronological order. The movie does use the historical event of the siege and subsequent massacre at Fort William Henry during the French and Indian War as a central plot point.
