Leonard is a resident of a mental institution. Hurley had often heard him repeat a set of numbers. Those are the numbers that Hurley used to win the lottery. After his bad luck following winning the lottery, Hurley went to see Leonard. Leonard told him about his friend who also knew about the numbers and then got very upset when Hurley said that he had used the numbers. Leonard's friend lived in Australia, so Hurley flew there.
