March 15 - Charles Cornwallis commands at the Battle of Guilford Courthouse, North Carolina.
May - Charles Cornwallis and his forces sail north to Virginia.
July 6 - Charles Cornwallis defeats the Marquis de Lafayette at Green Spring, Virginia.
October 17 - Charles Cornwallis surrenders to General George Washington at the Battle of Yorktown, Virginia.

1782
May - Charles Cornwallis is offered the Governor-Generalship of India, but is unable to accept.

1783
February - Charles Cornwallis resigns as Constable of the Tower of London
November - Charles Cornwallis assumes the military duties of the Constable of the Tower of London.

1786
February 23 - Charles Cornwallis named Governor of India.

1793
- Charles Cornwallis is made the 1st Marquess Cornwallis.

1794
- Charles Cornwallis returns to England.

1797
February 11 - Charles Cornwallis assumes the post of Governor-General and Commander in Chief of Ireland.

- Charles Cornwallis resigns as Governor-General of Ireland.

1805
- Charles Cornwallis is named Governor of India again.
October 5 - Charles Cornwallis dies in Ghazipore, India.
