January 9 - Thomas Paine's pamphlet Common Sense is published for the first time in Philadelphia.

February 27 - Continental Congress establishes the Southern Department of the Continental Army and appoints Englishman Maj. General Charles Lee as Commander.

February 27 - Battle of Moore's Creek Bridge.
Patriots defeat Loyalists at the bridge, located about 17 miles from Wilmington, North Carolina.

March 17 - British evacuate Boston, Massachusetts.

April 10 - Battle of Block Island, New York.

June 8 - Battle of Trois Rivières, Canada.

June 28 - Battle of Fort Sullivan; Charleston, South Carolina; First Battle of Charleston.
