William Martin is Benjamin Martin's youngest son and only Susan is younger. As the film begins in 1776, William is a six year old learning to read with the help of his oldest sister, Margaret. In 1778, he is only eight and has little to do in the movie, except stand beside his father or Margaret and run around and play in the background. William is left behind with Susan under Margaret's care when Benjamin, Nathan and Samuel go rescue Gabriel.

William serves no purpose in the movie. Unlike the other six children, he has no scenes where he is on center stage. His presence only rounds out the number of the Martin children to seven. He could easily have been removed from the story with no effect beyond changes to a couple of dialogue references.
