Abigale
is the Martins' housekeeper. She probably has become the surrogate mother for
Margaret,
William
and Susan
since the death of their mother
in 1773. On the day that the British come to the Martin farm and burn it down,
she is upset, but like the rest of the employees she must move on.
Later in the film, she reappears when Gabriel
leads Charlotte
and the children to a Gullah camp where Abigale and some of the other former
Martin 'employees' are staying. She helps look after Susan and also witnesses
Gabriel and Anne's
wedding.
