Tom Wilkinson was born in December 1948 in Leeds, England to a family of urban
farmers. For a time, his family moved to Canada because of econmic hardships.
Wilkinson graduated from the University of Kent with a major in English and
American Literature. In the mid-1970's, he began working on British television
and stage. In 1989, his daughter Alice was born to he and his wife Diane Hardcastle.
In 1992, a second daughter, Molly was born.
After a career of over twenty years, Tom Wilkinson finally received international
attention for his role in The
Full Monty, which earned him a British Academy of Film and Television
Arts Award (BAFTA) for Best Supporting Actor in 1998. Since then, he has worked
steadily, in major supporting roles in such Hollywood films as the Jackie Chan
Hour, the Oscar-winning Shakespeare
in Love (for which he received a BAFTA Best Supporting Actor Nomination)
and the Mel Gibson blockbuster The
Wilkinson has also gotten larger roles in smaller films such as Wilde,
Governess with Minnie Driver, Ride
with the Devil and Essex
Boys. In 2001, a lead role in the independent film In
The Bedroom led to his first BAFTA Best Lead Actor nomination and his
first Oscar nomination also for Best Actor. His upcoming films include The
Importance of Being Earnest and Before You Go.
