Gregory Smith was born in Toronto, Canada on July 6, 1983 and holds dual citizenship in Canada and the United States. He made his first appearance in a Tide commercial at the age of fourteen months. His first film role came in 1994's Andre, which was followed by the lead role in Leapin' Leprechauns in 1995. That year he also appeared in the short-lived television series, The Adventures of Captain Zoon in Outer Space and portrayed Frances Fisher's son in the telefilm The Other Mother.

In 1996, Gregory Smith appeared in the Rick Moranis-Tom Arnold comedy, Big Bully, as Harriet's friend in Harriet the Spy starring Rosie O'Donnell and in Spellbreaker: Secret of the Leprechauns, the sequel to Leapin' Leprechauns. In 1997, he was awarded the UNICEF Award at the Berlin Film Festival as well as the Young Artist Award for Best Leading Young Actor for his role in Shadow Zone: My Teacher Ate My Homework, which also starred Shelly Duvall.

In 1998, Gregory Smith costarred in the Richard Dreyfuss-comedy Krippendorf's Tribe, in The Climb with John Hurt and in Small Soldiers with Kirsten Dunst. In 1999, he costarred in the telefilm Zenon: Girl of the 21st Century. In 2000, he portrayed Mel Gibson's second oldest son in The Patriot. In 2001, he played Mary Stuart Masterson's son in the short-lived television series, Kate Brasher. He also portrayed James Younger in American Outlaws and appeared in the telefilm Just Ask My Children.

Gregory Smith has also had numerous guest-starring roles on such television programs as Sirens, The Commish, Outer Limits, Street Justice, Hat Squad, Highlander: The Series, Touched by an Angel and Are You Afraid of the Dark? In 2002, Gregory Smith began costarring with Treat Williams in the critically acclaimed WB series, Everwood. He also stars in the upcoming ABC's Wide World of Disney miniseries, A Wrinkle in Time.
